The 13 Elements

In the beginning there was nothing, and then there was something. God decided to create life, but needed something in order to sustain it. That is when 13 beings were created. They were later known as the elemental primordials.Cephas: Ruler of the element Earth.
Marella: Ruler of the element Water.
Frith: Ruler of the element Wind.
Cyra: Ruler of the element Fire.
Vetra: Ruler of the element Thunder.
Eira: Ruler of the element Ice.
Kedar: Ruler of the element Force also known as Gravity.
Arius: The Keeper of Time
Dahlia: Ruler of Nature, flowers, and vegetation.
Grimshaw: Ruler of shadows and darkness.
Aurora: Ruler of Light.
Aruna: The Ruler of the Moon and Space.
Aziel: The Protector of the Aether (the synergy that binds all realms and life together.)
Without these elements life would not be able to survive on its own and the primordials exist in order to keep the balance of the many realms and worlds of the universe. In order to make their jobs easier the primordials gave birth to greater and lesser spirits of their elements. This ensured that they would have eyes and ears everywhere and be alerted about abnormalities or trouble as it appears.Lesser spirits are common and can be found everywhere. Think nymphs, dryads, water sprites, fire salamanders, etc.Greater spirits however, are typically guardians of sacred areas. They are not as commonly found. Lessers can evolve into one but it is a process that takes a great deal of mana and passing several trials bestowed by the primordial of your element.Another thing that was brought about with the birth of life, the primordials, and spirits is mana. Mana is a diluted version of the life stream, humans and spirits are not able to fully use the power of the Aether. It would kill them. The only being able to withstand the pure force of the Aether would be Aziel. The solution that allows humans, spirits and other primodials to weave elements together, make contracts with others, and more is mana.

Origin of the cat eared tribe

The Miqu are a race of people who are blessed by various greater spirits. Their ancestors gained the favor of the greater elementals in their area due to the respect that they showed to the surrounding nature. They believed that all life had a purpose no matter how big or small. Their village was docile and welcomed everyone and every critter. There was an abundance of cats that roamed free and everyone took turns taking care of them. It was common to not be able to go ten steps without seeing one milling about or lazing in the sun. The spirit's blessing manifested itself as an affinity for magic (manipulating, deconstructing, and constructing the thirteen elements.) They also enabled the Miqu to communicate with other spirits easily. Their language became like a second language for the Miqu. The mark of this blessing manifested itself as cat ears and a cat tail due to the fuzzy residents that become their hallmark.

Her Past

Humans had been coveting her people for as long as she could remember. While there were many other races who could use magic, theirs were among the few fortunate enough to receive blessings directly from the elementals, which explains their long lives and magical prowess. This meant that most humans would stop at nothing to control someone like her. So she and her family hid their status using magic. They blended in by hiding their feline traits and pretended to be inept in the magical arts. Her parents routinely warned her of the dangers that humans bring and that she should never reveal what she truly was to them. Though she heeded their warning, why would she be cautious of her friends and neighbors? They were kind to her, watched her grow up and fed her when she was hungry. That’s why when she saw that one of her friends was in danger of being trampled by a runaway bull, she did not hesitate to use her powers to save them. But she was young and inexperienced, so while all of her focus was on ensuring their safety she unveiled her feline features to everyone around. At first she thought that she would be met with cheers and praise, but when she scanned the crowd all she could see were the calculating gazes of adults weighing their options. It frightened her so she quickly ran home, no one stopped her out of fear of her going berserk in the town square. While the townspeople were greedy, they also had some sense about them. They collectively agreed to notify the guardsman and militia to collect the reward for reporting a Miqu. Upon arriving home, she breathlessly explained what happened and with no hesitation her parents grabbed her in order to flee. Unfortunately they were not able to escape unnoticed, and her father had to stay behind in order to buy them time. For years, she and her mother lived on the run. That is until her mother was faced with a choice, allow her daughter and herself to be caught or to do the same as her husband and sacrifice herself for the sake of her child. She chose the latter and allowed her darling child to escape. Three years was how long the final one lasted. It took three years of running, hiding, and being guilt ridden for her spirit to finally break. She decided to turn herself in and face the trial. During the trial she was given a choice between becoming a government dog doing whatever they wanted or being put to death. Since this was the end, she decided to go all out. Unabashedly she condemned and cursed the officials before her, allowing her hatred and disdain to show through. She ended her speech by saying that she would rather die than take a knee before those that murdered her family. Her grievances were finally aired out. She took solace in the fact that at least in death she would be able to reunite with her family. Her eyes drifted shut as she made peace with her fate. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of clapping that came from within the audience. A man stood and commended her for her foolish bravery. With a smile he told her that if she didn’t need her life, why not give it to him. The two struck a deal, if he could eliminate everyone in the room with them, then her life was his. When he fulfilled his end of the bargain, she offered him a vow of obedience in return. She abandoned her past and gained a new name ‘Carina’. Centuries came and went, in that time she grew accustomed to her new life with Haborym. He did not ask for much, just help in furthering his research, answers to his questions on what she was, and to occasionally handle some work for him. It wasn’t a fast process but eventually she felt her walls come down around her savior and viewed him as an important person in her life. The two became thick as thieves and she didn’t mind it if she spent the rest of her life doing this. She was happy. But all good things must come to an end. Haborym’s greed and ambition soon became his undoing. His attempts at moving up the social ladder made those above him unhappy and they decided that he was a problem that they needed to squash out before it got too big. So they laid siege to his territory and stormed his manor. Of course Carina stuck by his side like glue as this happened. She was completely prepared to give her life in order to protect him….but she never got the chance. Before the enemy could burst into the study where the two were holed up Haborym grabbed her by the collar and tossed her through a portal. He gave her a look that she couldn’t quite decipher, and she could only watch in horror as the portal swiftly closed behind her. No amount of crying, screaming, or spell casting would allow her to return. It appeared that he completely sealed off his territory from her attempts to join in the battle. It didn’t take long for the gravity of the situation to sink in, but she still held faith. She soothed her nerves by thinking that if Haborym was willing to send her away, it meant she wouldn’t have been needed. He must have been confident in his abilities, and she should just wait for him. So she opened a gateway to a place that she knew he would be able to find her. A summer home that he often frequented whenever he needed a break for it all. She decided that this would be the place where she would wait for him. Surely, he would come back for her. Surely, he was alive. Surely...he didn’t abandon her. This faith disappeared as time went on and worry soon took its place. But she rationalized her choices, surely if something did happen. Her master would recover, and then he would search for her. She should make the process as easy as possible. Her new goal was preservation and she acted accordingly. Placing a spell upon herself, she made it so that she wouldn’t have to leave this place for basic necessities. The spell also slowed down her bodily functions so that she would fall into a deep ‘sleep’. Allowing herself to stay alive for a prolonged length of time. As long as her mana supply did not run dry, she would not die. This would give her half a millennia at least. With her magical capabilities this was the maximum amount of time she could muster without diving into organ failing territory. Besides, if he didn’t come for her, she had no reason to live. As she stated all those years ago her life belonged to him and if he were no longer around then she had no need for it. As she fell into her slumber she couldn’t help but think back to that last look that the two shared and she couldn’t help but wonder, ‘why?’
